Pet Allergy Remedy Guide

We all love those furry, snuggly, playful critters. But if you are anything like me, getting within 5 feet of pets causes sniffling, sneezing, itching and watery eyes. Do not despair!

Gizmo

I recently bought a kitten to go along with my new house, and she is the cutest thing in the world. Her name is Gizmo and we got her very young–at 5 weeks–though we didn’t know it at the time. We were told she was the runt and that her mother was tiny. She was very sick, had to be hospitalized twice. She is my miracle kitty, even if I am highly allergic to cats! This all forged an unbreakable bond that will not let silly pet allergies get in the way of good health and a good relationship with your beloved pet.

Symptoms of Pet Allergies

A pet allergy is generally triggered by an immune system response to pet dander, saliva and urine. Most people who suffer from pet allergies have similar symptoms to other seasonal and environmental allergies. Many pet allergy sufferers (like myself) also constantly complain about nasal congestion, post nasal drip, sinus pressure, sinus pain, swollen eyes, and an itchy mouth or throat. Sometimes you can break out in hives when you physically come into contact with an allergen.
Cats, dogs, rodents and rabbits all are common culprits of pet allergies. An allergy skin test done by an allergy specialist can determine what pets you are allergic to, and how severe the allergy is. If allergies and asthma run in your family, you have a higher risk of developing them.
Medication Allergy Remedies
Medications are a popular pet allergy treatment, whether it be over-the-counter meds or prescriptions. Your doctor or pharmacist may recommend antihistamines, decongestants, corticosteroids, nasal spray or leukotriene modifiers (i.e. Singulair). Most medications are symptomatic treatments. Allergy shots can provide a long-term treatment alternative.
Lifestyle Changes to Reduce Your Pet Allergy
Making changes in your home and habits are a risk-free pet allergy treatment:

  • Clean you house on a regular basis.
  • Switch carpeting with hardwood floors.
  • Wash your bedding and pillows.
  • Put mattress and pillow covers on to protect them from allergens.
  • Install HEPA air filters throughout the house.
  • Give your pet frequent baths.

* Some people recommend keeping a pet outside all of the time (where applicable) or getting rid of the pet. I am not fond of either of those pet allergy treatments.
