Not everyone wants to take medications to cure their allergies, so begins the search for a natural allergy remedy. Different allergies and allergens can require a different approach than others. The first and foremost treatment for environmental or external allergens is to eliminate them. Lowering or eliminating the reaction can save a lot of time and energy. Here are some natural remedies for allergy relief:
1. Acupuncture. Find an alternative medicine specialist who can do acupuncture targeted at your allergies. Acupuncture is a holistic allergy remedy that involves having extremely thin needs inserted at specific locations on your body to target certain illnesses or symptoms.
2. Neti Pot. Buy a neti pot. These are pots you can put a saline or salt water rinse in and rinse your nasal passages out. Lean over the sink with the neti pot and pour the water into one side of your nose, letting it drain out the other. Nasal irrigation can help relieve many allergy symptoms.
3. Air filters. Installing HEPA (high energy particulate arresting) air filters throughout your house can remove allergens from the air that trigger allergic reactions in the body.
4. Quercetin. Quercetin is a herbal allergy remedy from a natural plant extract that helps prevent histamine from being released in the body. Supplements are often recommended at 1,000 mg daily. Histamine is the chemical the body releases when it has an allergic reaction. Antihistamines are over-the-counter medications people often take for symptomatic relief.
5. Massage. Do whatever it takes to eliminate stress from your life. Stress weaknes the immune system, which is what reacts to allergens. Our immune system sees an allergen as a threat, which is when it releases histamine.
6. Saline. Saline is a natural alternative to nasal sprays, which can be addictive. Use saline to flush out your sinus passages. You can buy saline nasal spray over the counter at any drugstore.
7. Butterbur. Butterbur (Petasites hybridus) is another one of the holistic allergy remedies that has been showing positive results in clinical trials in the treatment of allergies.
8. Air conditioner. Air conditioning your house can make a huge difference with pollen, mold and dust mites. An air conditioner will keep humidity down and filter the air. Use the air conditioner in the car as well.
9. Dehumidifier. Run a humidifier to keep humidity down for the same reasons. Dust mites do not do well when humidity is under 45 percent. Clean the dehumidifier often.
